Travel Tips for Air Travel with Children

A trip to Walt Disney World with children is surely exciting! However sometimes your Disney World, Florida vacation can be equally overwhelming for both you and the children. With a little planning you may be able to escape your Disney World vacation without feeling like you need another vacation!

Plan Ahead

Knowing how you will tackle the logistics of the flight to Disney area will be an important part of getting your vacation off to a smooth start. Here are some ideas that may help along the way.

1. If your traveling with several kids and at least two adults, consider splitting your party and booking seats in separate rows. Kids like to move about from time to time and having seats in separate rows will allow them to trade seats in the middle of the flight. Even better they can each have some quality time one on one with you. Play a game, talk about school, or pull out brochures and plan together what you will do at Walt Disney World when you arrive. If you have small children this also works well. A crying or restless child can sometimes be soothed quickly with a new scene. Even if it is only a few rows away.

2. If your airline offers pre-boarding choose one adult to go ahead during the early boarding call. This person can install any child safety seats, stow carry-on luggage, and even leave a small Disney surprise (stuffed animal or other small toy) on the seat where the children will be. These little tidbits really create magical moments for the little ones! The remaining adult and kids should then board at the last minute. Give the kids as much time as possible to stretch and move before boarding. They will spend enough time in a tight area.

3. Think about yourself. Your day of travel to Walt Disney World may only be a couple hours away via plane. However, it can sometimes seem like an eternity! Wear comfortable clothing and shoes. Consider dark colors just in case a sippy cup should spill during the trip. Remember temperature changes especially if you are traveling from a different climate. Pack a sweater or wear it wrapped around the waist. You will want to do this for the children too. Florida is definitely hot and so this is sometimes overlooked but the airport and aircraft is often kept cool and this can be very uncomfortable if you aren't properly dressed for it. Besides, the going rate for a blanket on the aircraft has gone up significantly. Planning early can save you money.

4. If yours is a larger family you might even consider flying separately to the Disney area. Not only is it easier to maneuver with less children but planned right you can each have a bit less work to do. The early departing adult can enjoy curbside drop off, check all luggage curbside and proceed to the gate. Upon arrival to the Disney area the early departing parent can pick up the luggage and secure the rental car or shuttle. This way the later departing parent can obtain airport parking for the family car and enjoy quick curbside pick-up when they arrive. If any problems with baggage or the rental car occur there is time before all of the kids are together and restless to get it sorted out.

5. Pack a light bag of goodies for the children. Save money by ensuring you pack non-perishable snacks for the kids. Air travel can be very unpredictable and you never know when you will be delayed. A few light snacks can save a lot of time and money when you find yourself waiting longer than you expected. Leave ice packs at home as they violate the 3 oz. rule for liquids and gels.

6. Be prepared! You have saved and planned for your Walt Disney World vacation and deserve to have it go off without a hitch. Make sure you protect your investment, memories, and peace of mind by insuring your trip. Travel insurance is a small cost for a great deal of protection and peace of mind.

7. Pick the right accommodation for your family. This is probably the most important part of the trip and will be discussed in further detail in a later post. There are many types of accommodations including Disney area condos, Disney area vacation home rentals, and Disney area hotels. You can view the different types of accommodations at www.holidayvillaz.com. Choose the type that is right for your family. If you are looking to save money over the course of the trip a vacation home or Disney area condo maybe the perfect solution. They provide a full kitchen and amenities similar to what you would find at home. Meals can be far less expensive with this type of accommodation saving you even more. Often times the nightly rate is even less that a hotel.
